Aruni Rajapakse - Miss Sri Lanka 2007

“As you may have seen, my happiness and emotion took the better of me as I started to cry with happiness. Though I was a bit scared I was ecstatic about the fact that I won. When Maria was crowned 1st runner up I knew that I had won the pageant for Jackie (Miss Sri Lanka 2006) came and crowned me from behind…”

“Although I live in Colombo, my home town is Kandy and I schooled at Swarnamali Maha Vidyala in Kandy. Ever since I was small I was interested in modelling and then later as I grew older, I was keen on taking part in the Miss Sri Lanka contest for Miss Universe.”

























When asked whether she had prior experience in taking part in beauty pageants, she replied that she had won the Udrata Manike in the year 2004 and Capri Queen in 2005. “Although I wanted to take part sooner in the Miss Sri Lanka pageant I decided to take my time and gain more experience before participating in it.” So how supportive were her parents? “At the start my father wasn’t very supportive because some of his relations didn’t like the idea of me being a model for we are Kandyan , but later on he changed his mind and now he’s very supportive but most of all my mother and sister are the ones that have been right behind me, supporting me.”

Talking more about the pageant she also added, “I also won several mini titles such as Himalaya Miss Talent, Veet Smoothest, Reebonn Miss Beautiful Skin and finally Hilton Miss Personality. For the Miss Talent pageant I performed a Kandiyan dance for a song by Chandra Lekha. Since I had taken dancing lessons when I was at school and this was for the Miss Sri Lanka I thought a dance act would be more suitable” she said .

So what does she hope to do in the future?

“My future plans are to continue with my modelling career which I have been doing for the past two years and also to be successful internationally as well. Of course I am looking forward to going to Mexico to represent my country in the Miss Universe 2007 pageant and I will try to serve Sri Lanka to the best of my ability….” By Sherwani Synon for Daily Mirror

Sachini Ayendra Stanley -Miss Sri Lanka 2003

Sachini comes from the beautiful city of Kandy, the hill capital of Sri Lanka, where she studied at the Hillwood College, Kandy, and passed her O and A level exams. Whilst at school she was a member of the Interact Drama Club, Vice President of the English Literary Association, President of the Young Writers Club and sang in the choir. On completion of her studies she moved to the capital, Colombo, and now works as an Accounts Executive at an advertising agency.

Her ambition is to study Business Administration and become a successful business woman, she would also like to start her own brand in women’s clothing and accessories in Asia. Her hobbies/sports interests are: Music, singing, acting, reading, watching movies, modern dance and swimming. Sachini also loves spending time with her cat called “Kittyfur”.

Anarkalli was born and raised in the capital Colombo, she is an only child of parents who are both in the film industry. Anarkalli started acting from the age of nine and has appeared in cinemascope movies and TV Dramas, she attended drama school and is now an Actress. Her ambition is to become an Ambassador for UNICEF. Her hobbies include: writing speeches, writing songs and designing clothes. Sporting interest are: Netball, basketball, cricket, croquet, bowling, pool, athletics, Western dancing and Kandyan Dancing. Her personal motto is "Always be a first-rate version of yourself instead of a second-rate version of somebody else".





Where did you grow up?
Tell us a little about your home town/city, and family.
I was born and raised in the capital of Sri Lanka Colombo. I am an only child and my parents are both in the film industry.

What was the most interesting/bizarre?
As an actress the most interesting and different thing I have done is TV Presenting for Sports Giants ESPN during the Asia Cup 2004, which was held in Sri Lanka.

What are your career ambitions, how do you plan to realise them?
I want to be an ambassador for UNICEF and I plan to use my national title to accomplish the ambition.

What is the proudest moment of your life?
(Not including winning your National Title) The proudest moment of my life was when my first cinemascope movie was released.
What was the funniest/most embarrassing moment of your life?
The funniest moment of my life was when I was in a rush to go out I accidentally put on two different coloured shoes and went out. Luckily the shoes were the same style and design so when people asked me about my shoes I just said that It was a fashion statement.
What was the funniest/most embarrassing moment of your life?
After winning Miss Sri Lanka 2004 my life has changed as I can do a greater service for the world using my title.

Tell us about an interesting event you have attended, or a person that you have met.
The most interesting event I have attended is a charity auction in London to raise money for cancer patients in Sri Lanka. British celebrities Apache Indian and Shola Ama also attended.

What would you like to do, if you became Miss World 2004?
If I become Miss World 2004, I would like to campaign for crime against children. I believe that these children are in great need of protection as we are in a world today, which is under-going, a very abnormal increase in crime. These children need saving, as they are our future.

If you had a personal motto what would it be?
Always be a first-rate version of yourself instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.
Give details of any charitable work undertaken?
Raising funds for Children’s Ward Cancer Hospital Maharagama, Sri Lanka (2000 - 2002).
Collecting books, clothes etc for orphans and the poor (every year).
Charity auction in London for Cancer patients in Sri Lanka (2002).
Collecting food and drink together with leading newspaper publishers. ‘Lakehouse’ for people who are suffering from drought - relief (2004).

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life. Why?
My Fiance, Saliya. Growing up in a single parented [MOM] woman dominated Family has given me that extra strenth and courage to be a go getter. But he filled in a void in my life that I never knew existed.

What is the most interesting or unique thing that has ever happened to you (aside from winning your title) and/or what is the most interesting thing about you?
When I was thirteen I experienced floods. I woke up that morning to step in to knee lenth water. I had fun though the elders had to re do every thing to re- build our lives. Re-doing my school books was not fun though. But I learnt that every thing in life is temporary!
What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?
To model my own designer label on foriegn ramp. designing for my self, sticting the and then markting them by opening my own boutique was a starter. currently I am planning some local fashion shows. Reognized as a top ramp model locally I am marching my way to international stardom.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.
I was brought up in a typical burgher family inbetween two brothers. Was called the rose between two thorns. My Christian backgroung has helped me imensly. Have lived a very tom boyish childhood a total transformation to what I am now.

What is your most unusual talent?
Doing several things at the same time. [Crew member, Model, Actress, Designer, entrepreneur, Dancer] and reached heights in them too.

Interview with Jacqueline Fernandez

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?
I love horseback riding for the rush and for spending time outdoors; cooking for creativity and learning from/being with my grandmother; and reading for relaxation. I enjoy horseback riding the most because it gives me a thrill like no other and it is a wonderful, environmentally friendly way to explore the outdoors.

Name one person other than your parents who has had the most influence on your life. Why?
I have looked up to my brother Warren from childhood. He has pursued his lifelong dream and succeeded in what he has put his mind to. He has won the national bodybuilding championship in Australia two years in a row and was extremely devoted, disciplined and persistent in what he did. He has inspired me to never give up and to believe in myself.
What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?
I aspire to be an international political broadcaster, much like my idol Christiane Amanpour. I am currently working as an anchorwoman/reporter for the "Lanka Business Report" on a leading TV channel in Sri Lanka and intend on furthering my education to obtain a degree in Political Science/Mass Media.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.
I was raised in Bahrain where my parents worked. Bahrain is a moderate, modern, little desert island in the Middle East full of warm and friendly people. As a child, I was an achiever, always setting my goals high and accomplishing them. I was brought up to be very independent. Both my parents worked full time so my three other siblings and I had to look out for each other and work as a team. Growing up was an enjoyable learning experience for me.
What makes you unique and different from the other contestants?
An international perspective in life makes me unique and different. I have traveled and lived in different countries, both developed and developing, and have been exposed to various cultures, languages, and people. It has shaped me to be a very cosmopolitan, sensitive, tolerant, and diplomatic person. Also, as Sri Lankans are renowned for their hospitality and approachability my blood/cultural background inherently makes me unique.
