Premature Skin Aging - Hand Care

Your hands are usually the first place on your body to show signs of age, and they can make you look — gulp — five to 10 years older than you really are …On the other-hand it can make you younger.

These are your hands’ glory days: For the most part, they’re soft, plump, and evenly toned. Your primary concern isn’t so much combating the signs of aging, but preventing them.

Cumulative sun exposure is the biggest cause of premature skin aging — and now’s the time to start protecting yourself. Apply a moisturizer with an SPF of 15 at least twice a day.

If you plan to be in strong sunlight for long periods of time, use a sunscreen that has a UVA-blocking agent in it — either transparent zinc oxide or Parsol 1789 — since UVA rays cause brown spots and wrinkles.

Once a week, lightly slough off the dead skin flakes on your hands with a gentle facial scrub. Removing this flaky, occlusive layer will help your daily moisturizer penetrate your skin more deeply.

Fade minor brown spots or areas of discoloration by applying an over-the-counter lightening cream nightly. Beware: Spots will reappear if you’re not stringent about sunscreen use.

Hand and Nail Care: Do and Don’t for Healthy Hands

Having healthy and beautiful hands and nails is not that difficult especially if you know these simple do and don’t tips:

Do’s

  • Wear rubber gloves lined with cotton when your hands are in contact with harsh soaps, detergents or chemicals
  • Wear gloves when doing work that might damage the hands or nails, such as gardening or shovelling snow;# After washing your hands, pat dry and, while moist, use a moisturizer on the hands, cuticles and nails.Chemically enhanced moisturizers that contain urea of lactic acid are even more efficient in binding water to the skin (Uremol, Calmurid, Lachydrin, Lacticare)
  • After washing your hands, pat dry and, while moist, use a moisturizer on the hands, cuticles and nails.Chemically enhanced moisturizers that contain urea of lactic acid are even more efficient in binding water to the skin (Uremol, Calmurid, Lachydrin, Lacticare);
    If your hands must be in and out of water frequently apply a silicone or a similarly based protectant film that sheds water over the hands and nails (Prevex, Atrixo, Barriere Cream);
    If nails darken despite good cleansing habits, a drop of lemon oil massaged twice weekly into the nail plate may work but must not be overdone or irritation of the surrounding skin and drying of the nail plate may occur.
  • Nail polish protects the nail from stains, physical trauma, and acts as a barrier to chemicals. Use it but don`t overuse it or it may stain and dry nails, particularly if nail polish hardeners are used frequently. A base coat will allow your polish to last longer;
    If your nails are dry, soak them for 10 minutes twice daily in warm water, pat dry and immediately apply one of the chemically enhanced moisturizers that contain urea, lactic acid or glycerin oil
  • Sculpt and shape your nails by filling in one direction with a very fine file. Avoid vigorous up and down or back and forth motions which may tear apart the various layers of the nails. Avoid sharp angles. Attend to small cracks, snags and breaks immediately;
    Treat yourself to a weekly manicure if possible; it is relaxing and keeps the nails healthy looking and attractive. Do not forget your toenails
  • As they age, the nails thicken, grow more slowly, repair poorly and are susceptible to various skin diseases. Watch for changes and see your dermatologist early enough to treat problems.

Do Not’s
  • Avoid digging blindly into a drawer or purse where a sharp object may crack or break the nail or harm the delicate skin around the nail;
  • Avoid using the nails to do pick-up tasks. Use the soft ends of the fingers rather that the fragile nail. they will soon chip and break if used this way;
  • Avoid gluing on false or molded nails; allergic and painful reactions may occur. “Mending paper” or tea-bag paper can be used to bridge large cracks;
  • Do not reapply nail hardener or polish more often than necessary; these agents can discolor nails and make them brittle if overused. Try to repair your manicure rather than replace it. Avoid chipping and peeling off nail polish;
  • Do not bother adding gelatin and calcium supplements to an otherwise well-balanced diet. They have no know positive effects on the nails despite certain claims;
  • Do not use too much polish remover. Apply moisturizer after using nail polish remover in order minimize the irritating and drying cation of the acetone;
  • Do not grow excessively long nails; they are too prone to breakage;
  • Do not push back your cuticles too vigorously or you will harm the growing moon of the nail.Push them back only when the skin around the nails is warms and wet and therefore softer and easier to manipulate;
  • Avoid applying sharp instruments under the nails. They might break the nail to skin bond;
  • Do not ignore nails that separate from beds (it may be due to iron or thyroid deficiency), nails that thicken (it may be fungus infection) or pit (it may be psoriasis. See your doctor. The nail and skin reflect internal well being or disturbance.

Manicure tips -improves the appearance of the hands and nails

Giving a manicure, or manicuring as it is called professionally, was once considered only a luxury for the rich. More and more women (and men) now have regular manicures. Manicuring is derived from the Latin word manus which means hand and cura which means care. Manicuring improves the appearance of the hands and nails. Giving a manicure isn’t hard once you know the basic steps.

  1. Remove the old polish. Moisten a cotton ball with nail polish remover. The type of polish remover depends on your personal preference. Press the cotton ball over the nail for a few seconds to soften the old polish. Wipe gently with the cotton ball on the nail starting at the base of the nail to the tip. This keeps old polish from smearing into the cuticle.
  2. Shaping the nail is the next step. The fingernails should be filed into oval tips. Begin on the left hand with the little finger and work towards the thumb. Hold the finger between your thumb and the first two fingers of the left hand. Hold the fingernail file in the right hand. Slant the fingernail file so that the filing is done mostly to the under side of the nail. File each fingernail from the corner to the center, going from right to left and then from left to right. On each side of the fingernail, stroke in one direction only. Repeat the process on the right hand.
  3. Softening the cuticles is accomplished by soaking the fingers in a small finger bowl filled with soapy water. A few drops of mild dish soap added to water in the finger bowl works well. Carefully dry the hand by holding a small towel and place, the hand on the towel. Dry the hand while simultaneously pushing back the cuticle and skin on each fingernail. Be very gentle.
  4. Apply cuticle remover by following the directions on the cuticle remover tube or bottle. Gently loosen the cuticle with an orangewood stick or cuticle pusher. Keep the cuticle moist while working. Wash gently and dry.
  5. Clean under the free edge of the fingernail by dipping a cotton-tipped orangewood stick in soapy water and cleaning under the nail from the center outward to each side.
    Sometimes it is necessary to remove dead cuticle or hangnails with small scissors or cuticle nippers. Be very careful when you do this.
  6. Apply cuticle oil or cream at the base of the nail. Brush nails gently in a soapy water with a downward motion. Dry hands and nails thoroughly. Next use a very fine emery board. Buff nails giving them a smooth beveled edge. Wipe nails to remove any particles of cuticle or dead skin.
  7. Apply base coat using long strokes. When the base coat is dry to a light touch apply polish. Apply polish lightly with strokes from the base to the tip. Excess polish on cuticle or nail can be easily removed with cotton tipped orangewood stick moistened with polish remover. Apply a top or seal coat. Brushing the top or seal coat around and under the tips of the nail will give the nail added protection.
  8. The final step is to apply lotion. This can be done if time permits. Nails need to be completely dry. Start at the wrists moving down to the fingertips with light rubbing motion.

We all knows we are aging. When you hear about wrinkles and skin aging, your first thoughts are about face and neck. But the earliest signs of aging will show on your hands. Most people ignore the fact but hands need to be regularly taken care of, they will give away your age earlier than your pampered face.

Hand cream is a must have for your hands. Keep it in the bathroom, the bedroom and the kitchen. Use it!

Take care of your nails too. This starts with drinking enough water and eating a healthy diet. But here are a few more tips:

NEVER cut your cuticles. Keep them from drying out by using a good hand cream and hand soaks, then push them gently back with a cuticle/orange stick. Once you do this if you notice any white residue you can gently rub the area to remove this, but no cutting.

When you do cut your nails or hang nails make sure the clippers and other tools are very sharp so they don't tear as you trim. Always trim neat and clean-not too deep. Once you get them cut, try filing weekly instead of cutting. Use the file in one direction to avoid splitting and use a good quality file. If you maintain your nails this way you may not have cut them. Use gentle hand treatments to soften your skin and your cuticles. Here are a few you can make yourself:
